History and legend mingle in this charming village perched: legend has it that Bayard was the name of the champion horse of Rinaldo the latter visited this hill of rare charm.
But Hill Bajardo assumed religious importance even during the Golden Age the Iron Age (tenth century BC.) becoming a place of worship of the Druids, Celtic priests.
The most interesting part of the country is high. There are the remains of the Church of St. Nicholas, built on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple sacred to the god Abelia and destroyed by a devastating earthquake. On the morning of 27 February 1887, when the whole population was in church to receive ashes of Holy Wednesday, the earth shook and the roof of the church collapsed on the people of Bayard, decimated. Today, nothing seems to have been touched. The church is still without a roof, with the outer walls intact, all that remains of a stone altar and a grass instead of the floor. Do not miss
Porta dei Saraceni in local stone, the Oratorio di San Salvatore preserving a precious altarpiece depicting the Transfiguration in 1500 by Emanuele Maccario, the characteristic way Portaro Plan, and finally, just outside the village in a northerly direction The Romanesque church of St. Gregory from the eleventh century.
