Crossroads of arts and culture, from an ancient building to a tower, from a castle to a church, Valtellina reveals all its historical patrimony, with Lombard, Celtic, Carolingian and Mediterranean influences. A heritage which still lives nowadays, from alp to alp, valley to valley.
The long history of the Valtellina communities has evolved on this geographical-territorial basis, a history which shows strong ties to the land, which still bears the age-old signs of man’s presence, especially in the vineyards and mountain pastures, but it also shows political conflicts and deep-rooted religious passions, signs of which can still be seen in the churches (almost 500), the buildings and the monuments.
Valtellina is also a land of culture and art which bears witness to an ancient history whose roots are buried deep in prehistoric times (as shown by the Grosio rock carvings, which go back to 2200 – 1000 BC).
It is also a land of tradition, because the respect for past times and the memory of noteworthy customs, typical of those who lived in the valley, are still alive today.
Nowadays, these traditions can be seen in the village festivals and exhibitions which attract a large and enthusiastic public. Belltowers, churches, chapels, old quarters, boroughs, towers, palazzi everywhere..And meadows, vineyards, fields and woods all around.
This is the Valtellina to discover; a land rich in art and culture, bearing witness to a past of troubled historical and religious vicissitudes.
