Sanremo - Churches and places of worship

Chiesa Russa Ortodossa

The best known, and most architecturally original church in Sanremo, the Russian Orthodox Church erected in 1910 on behalf of the Russian community, then numerous in Sanremo. The project, by the Russian academician Aleksej V. Scusev, was followed by the San Remo architect Pietro Agosti and the engineer Tornatore. Consecrated in 1913 and dedicated to Christ the Savior, to Saint Catherine Martyr and Saint Serafim of Sarov, it was erected in the style of that of Saint Basil in Moscow and rises on an area dominating Largo Nuvoloni at the beginning of the Empress Walk.

Chiesa di San Matteo

The church of San Matteo is the parish church of Laigueglia. This is an example of religious architecture of the late Ligurian Baroque, but completely rebuilt several times during the eighteenth century. The church contains numerous works of pictorial art, almost all dating back to the seventeenth century and created by local authors. The church is attached to the oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena, which in turn preserves several works.

Santuario Nostra Signora di Soviore

Situated at 4 km from Monterosso, it was founded in the 14th century with contribution of local residents, who considered it as their own pilgrimage destination. Inside the beautiful church,which still attracts many visitors and devotees, a valuable historical organ Agati offers the occasion for fine concerts. The Sanctuary of Soviore is part of a track solely dedicated to sanctuaries, since each of the five village situated in Cinque Terre has a local religious church for pilgrimages.

Santuario Nostra Signora D.Costa

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Coast also known as ``Madonna della Costa`` is located on a panoramic hill of the city. A place very dear to the Sanremesi, for its fame of protection from dangers and for being miraculous. In 1630 there was a reconstruction in Baroque style due to a sailor. The dome was built between 1770 and 1775. Inside we can see a decoration with marbles, stuccoes, painted frescoes and sculptures by artists: Anton Maria Maragliano, Domenico Fiasella, Cesare Procaccini and Bartolomeo Guidobono.

La Commenda di San Giovanni di Prè

The Commenda di San Giovanni di Prè is located in the Genoese district of Prè and represents a building of Catholic worship in the Ligurian city. The structure includes two Romanesque-style churches and a three-story building called the Commenda, which identifies with the convent and the hospitable. In fact, at the time of the Third Crusade, Friar William, a member of the Jerosolimitani Knights, built the complex to use it as a shelter for pilgrims.

Oratorio di Santa Croce

Oratory of Santa Croce was built in 1690 by Marco Aicardi, and is the home of the Brotherhood of SS. Trinity. It was built to free the Christian prisoners in possession of the Turks. On the ground floor there are false arches, which are reminiscent of those of the main colonnade. At the rear is the triangular bell tower, surrounded by a characteristic seventeenth-century tip. Inside it we find erratic sculptures, such as the Pila dell'Acqua Santa, and several illuministic frescoes.

Oratorio di San Leonardo

The Oratory of San Leonardo, also known as the Oratory of Santa Caterina, dates back to the seventeenth century. After a significant restoration especially outside, the church returned to being a historic center of Porto Maurizio and an element of great importance of the historical and archaeological heritage of Imperia. In the church you can admire the best paintings by Gregorio Ferrari of Porto Maurizio: the Death of San Giuseppe by Sebastiano Conca; the Sorrows and the purgant souls; the statue of San Domenico and a chapel inside which you can find a small museum with the artifact of the Saint.

Cattedrale di Cristo Re

The construction of the cathedral dates back to 1975 in a strategic point of the city with the purpose of the unification of the historic districts with the eastern ones. The outside has the form of a hyperboloid to a flap. The 50m diameter drum cover supports the wall and unloads the weight towards the steel structure of the joints. The interior receives light from the glass window of the eye in the center of the dome, which combined with the original frescoes make the cathedral the most important Catholic religious place in the city.

Santuario di Nostra Signora delle Tre Fontane

The cult building is divided into two bodies, the first includes an atrium and a cantonia, area of the church in which the singers take place, in which there is a working organ from 1894. The second body consists of three parts, naves. Inside there are about fifty paintings of folk art, presumably from the 19th century, on the altar, located in the central nave, we find a wooden statue depicting the Madonna.

Chiesa di San Dalmazzo

The bell tower dates back to the '200, while the façade, the portal and the frescoes are from the fifteenth century. Inside there are several works by the artist Giovanni Carnavesio (Pinerolo, 1450 — 1500), a painting on wooden boards (polyptych) painting depicting Saint John the Baptist and San Biagio, a second polyptych with wooden bas-reliefs and finally a small fresco Madonna with the Child placed in the lunette of the Gothic portal.

Parrocchiale S. Giovanni Battista

The church of San Giovanni Battista is a place of Catholic worship of Cervo. The church is home to the homonymous parish of the vicariate of Diano Marina of the Diocese of Albenga-Imperia. The parish, named after St. John the Baptist, was built between the seventeenth and eighteenth century and is also known by the local name “dei Corallini”, because it was erected also thanks to the proceeds of fishing for the coral. The building is considered one of the major monuments in Baroque style on the Western Ligurian Riviera.

Santuario di Santa Caterina

Genoa is well known by many due to the point of owning a Sanctuary. This is a gratifying example of why it is termed by some people as a city with artistic attractions. It has a Genoese school of 16th century, which has the urn that belongs to Santa Caterina Fieschi Ardorno. This person died in the year 1510. She later became a saint by 1737 and from her work their rose her Saint Patron as the head of all the health organizations in Italy. These included hospitals and dispensaries. People still celebrate her job on 12th September each year
