Ancona - Archaeological Sites

Anfiteatro Romano (I sec)

The Roman Amphitheater of Ancona was erected between the end of the first century BC and the beginning of the second century AD. The amphitheater could accommodate from 7,000 to 10000 spectators. Later it was no longer used as a performance building, but rather assumed the role of a fortress. Currently the appearance of the Amphitheater is that of an ongoing construction site due to the historical and urban layering of the area, with the overlapping of buildings such as the Church of San Gregorio and the Convent of San Bartolomeo.
