SIENA PIAZZA DEL CAMPO AND THE PALIO

written by Jenny Black

Ostuni città bianca

From the top of its promontory overlooking a typical Mediterranean landscape of hills of wheat looming cypress trees. It is a city that is given in all its splendid architecture, landscape and cultural history.

The main attraction is definitely on the Piazza del Campo, shell-shaped square and enclosed by brick buildings. Piazza del Campo is the place where every year in late July and August takes place the Palio di Siena, one of the oldest and feeled event in Italy that involves the jockeys of the seventeen districts that make up the territory.

The event was originated in 1644 and since then has lived in the spontaneity of people who still run it themselves, even the purchase of seats in the stands can still today be bought in shops or buildings overlooking the square.

The most exciting experience is to participate in the in the public square between the comments of the various citizen of the different districts of Siena. Piazza del Campo is extremely fascinating when flags, sawdust and the horses transform it in a past city and transmitting you the atmosphere 400 years ago.
